"Villa Benzino", Landstuhl

The Benzino family arrived in this area around 1700 from northern Italy. They first settled in Kusel until 1730. The rich citizen Josef Johann Benzino had the "little castle" Built in 1841 at the Old Market Square as his representative residence. Its architectural style resembles that of North Italian Villas.

In the southern annex the owner used to keep his collection of paintings that later became to form the basis of the Pfalzgalerie collection.

Tenth barn (Tithe barn), Landstuhl

Since the Middle Ages this has been done on the site of a tithe barn, where the farmer paid taxes in kind. Noteworthy in the three-story building are the original heavy oak beams carrying the upper floor. Nowadays the interior is used for various cultural events (exhibitions, lectures etc.).

hotel "Moorbad Sickingen", Landstuhl

The late 19th century design of the former casino is quite impressive. Today it is the stylish setting of offices, apartments and a high-class restaurant and hotel.

The reliefs chiseled into the bed of the rock "Great mountain" are interpreted as part of a Roman well sanctuary. The reliefs were rediscovered in 1903. Experts consider this one of the best-preserved sanctuaries of its kind in Central Europe that is still in its original location.

Historic Old Town, Otterberg

Historic center of the "Walloon town", with beautiful half-timbered houses (e.g. "Blue House" – a historic restaurant) surrounded by a town wall. Guided tours for groups by appointment.

Old pharmacy (Old drugstore), Otterberg

The half-timbered house was built in 1608 by the tanner David Gille Anthoine. Purchased in 1836 by the pharmacist Leonhard Euler, which was used as a drugstore until 1966. The upper floor has a stucco ceiling from the 19th century, and the renovations on the ground floor are exposed.

A prehistoric menhir and burial ground as well as former roads are evidence of settlements in this region dating back thousands of years.

Celtic prince’s grave and tribunal site, Rodenbach

A sensational discovery caused quite a stir in the village of Rodenbach in 1874. At the "fox hill" a Celtic burial mound has been excavated and hurriedly excavated. Precious burial objects suggest that the person has been high ranked. Since that time, the Celtic grave, dated to around 400 B.C., has been known as the "Prince’s grave of Rodenbach" and is considered the most important find from the La Tène period north of the Alps.

The excavations unearthed iron weapons and bronze vessels, among others. The most valuable objects, however, were a golden bangle and a golden ring. All original finds are on display in the Historic Museum of the Palatinate in Speyer. Replicas of the bangle and ring can be seen in the Reinhard Blauth Museum in Weilerbach.

Additional replicas of the jewelry and all other finds are thus displayed in the reconstructed Prince’s Grave at the "Lower white laughter", directly along the "Prehistory and Early History" hiking trail.

The prince’s grave is freely accessible from April to the end of September daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Guided tours for groups can be arranged by calling: 06374/6242 or 06374/1266 or 06301/2155. In the immediate vicinity of the burial mound you can find the reproduction of a tribunal site discovered in 1595 near Rodenbach.

To Spinnradl, Kaiserslautern

The historic restaurant "To Spinnradl" dating from 1740 is the only remaining half-timbered house in Kaiserslautern.

Bismarck tower on Kirchberg hill, Landstuhl

The tower was built in 1900 on the foremost tip of the 371m high Kirchberg hill. The industrial magnate Baron von Stumm-Halberg financed the observation tower from private funds.

Well tunnel, Trippstadt

The well tunnel used to supply the castle and the town with water. Trippstadt through a passable tunnel. Overflows in the headwater valley. The system was constructed as a counterheadway (like in antiquity).

Some specialists in this field hold the view that the "Trippstadt well tunnel" is a historic architectural monument from the 18th century that is unique in Europe.

Villa Denis, Diemerstein

Stumpfwald tribunal site near Neuhemsbach

Stump forest tribunal site near Neuhemsbach The stump forest forest area between the three villages of Neuhemsbach, Alsenborn and Ramsen seems to have been used as a tribunal site in earlier times. Alsenborn via Radeckerhof to Neuhemsbach, on the Schelmenkopf hill, which is the site of the district court, the Stumpfwald tribunal "Nine chairs", as it was later called. Freely accessible year-round.

"thousand mill" (mill), Bruchmühlbach-Miesau

At the foot of the slum ravine read the "thousand mill" mill. It was built in 1598 and is the last remaining historic mill in the Kaiserslautern county.

Sickingen ranger’s lodge, spell

The Sickingen ranger’s lodge was built in 1761 by the descendants of Franz von Sickingen. It is one of the country mansions from the 18th century. Remarkable is the well-preserved rococo portal with shellwork decoration. Today the building is classified as a historical monument.

Jewish cemetery, Mehlingen

The Jewish cemetery at Mehlingen was established at the turn of the 18th to the 19th century. In 1938 the cemetery became the property of the German army and was released as a training ground, which it would remain after the war. It was not until 1949 that the governor-general’s office was unable to declare the cemetery off limits for training.

Since that time the cemetery helped to acre in size, has been in the possession of the Jewish Community of Rhineland Palatinate and is maintained by the municipality of Mehlingen. "Key available at the municipal administration"

Johanniskreuz (St. John’s cross)

This is an old wayside cross at the former border between the properties of the Leiningen and Wilenstein rulers. For a long time the coat of arms on the cross used to give rise to various speculations. The most likely assumption is that the cross-over to the former owners of the Hohenecken castle. Ideal starting point for a number of hikes.

Powder mill with powder pond, Schopp

The sandstone building of the 1935 former powder factory has been partially rebuilt.

Landstuhl landowner and innkeeper (post horse keeper) The mansion with his vaulted gates, his sprawling servants’ quarters and barns was built in the style of a castle.

In 1828 Didier ordered the castle at the Old Market to be torn down, only to mate elements of this building, as his the center section of the façade and the large outdoor stairs, in his new house. The large staircase and the balcony, however, had to make way for street construction in the late 19th century. Today the mansion is used by the forest administration, while the side buildings are privately owned.

"Old rentei" (Old fiscal office), Landstuhl

The office and residence of the Sickingen clerks – the "Rentei" – what was built in 1767. Above the entrance arch the building – still existing in its original form – has two floors, while the side wings have a floor with a mansard roof.

"Big Mountain" (Large hill), Kindsbach

The Celtic settlement "Big Mountain" above the village of Kindsbach, overlooking the Landstuhl Moors, dates from the 3rd to 4th century. In the year 352 the settlement was probably abandoned after an attack by the Teutons.

Stalactite cave / mining tunnel, Erzenhausen

A 1.80 m high, 76 m long tunnel constructed almost 300 years ago for the mining of ore. Many large stalactites have been renewed by the constantly dripping water.

equipment: Flash light and sturdy shoes required. In fall and winter the cave is closed and offers a place for hibernation for large numbers of bats.
