Varicose veins should always be examined and treated promptly if necessary

(dbp / wgt) Seven out of ten adults in Germany suffer according to the medical journal under spider veins or varicose veins. Thus, venous disorders are among the most common chronic diseases. Fatigue in the legs, nocturnal leg cramps, swelling and pain after prolonged standing are often the first signs of an onset of illness. In most cases, an inherited connective tissue weakness is the cause. However, typical civilization-related behaviors promote the development of varicose veins.

“Little exercise and a lot of standing or sitting are the main enemies of the veins. Overweight is one of them, “says Dr. Michael Wagner, President of the German Vein League. By standing or sitting for a long time, the blood sank into the legs and the circulation suffers. Women are significantly more likely to be affected by varicose veins than men. Hormonal changes during pregnancy weaken the muscle and connective tissue and thus promote the venous disease.

If spider veins are usually minor defects, more pronounced forms of varicose veins, such as varicose or lateral varicosis, can lead to serious problems if not treated on time. Phlebitis, thrombosis and open legs are the result. But also the risk of pulmonary embolism increases.

Prevention is easy

Those who spend most of their working hours standing or sitting can prevent the danger of venous disease by simple rules of conduct. For example, the German Veins League recommends that you simply put your feet up during work breaks. The blood can then flow from the legs back into the body. Getting up more often and taking a few steps through the office can help those who mostly sit at their desks. And regular hot and cold changing showers stimulate blood circulation again. But even simple sports activities are ideal for prevention: hiking and Nordic walking, cycling, gymnastics or swimming.

But what to do if the first spider veins or small varicose veins already appear under the skin? The German Vein League advises to visit a venous specialist (phlebologist) at the first sign. He can tell by a painless ultrasound scan how well the veins are working. If the doctor comes to the conclusion that treatment is required, graded methods are available depending on the severity of the disease. The basic therapy is compression bandages and stockings. By external pressure they counteract the build-up of blood in the veins.

If only one surgery helps

If the venous disease is already well advanced, so that experts speak of a chronic venous insufficiency, a surgical procedure may be necessary. One of the best known methods is the so-called vein stripping. Through small incisions in the skin, the affected vein sections are pulled out and removed. For some years, the stripping method has received competition from laser therapy. In the minimally invasive procedure, a laser probe is inserted into the vein under local anesthesia. With the laser beam the doctor welds the varicose vein. Another alternative is radio wave therapy. The surgeon introduces a small radiofrequency catheter into the diseased vein. By means of heat energy, the vein is only closed and not removed with this method.

Whether an operation is recommended and which method is best, should the affected person but in any case with a specialist.
