Philippines

Sure, who thinks of sights in the Philippines, thinks first of … beaches. And dreamlike dream beaches. Crystal clear water, palm trees, all the trimmings. Under the heading Philippines most beautiful beaches you will find a list of all beaches that we loved! But of course we have not only found beaches, but some other tips that we present here!

01. Siquijor Island • Beaches and waterfalls

This island is just a little paradise! You will find few tourists here, everything is even more original, peaceful and the beaches … make the most of it yourself! And do not let that stop you from going there, even if locals advise against it: they believe that the island is teeming with evil magic and witches. For them it is a complete taboo to ever travel there, because it is the witch island par excellence. The belief in it has stood up to this day. And yet Siquijor is a gem! Moreover, Siquijor is also a good starting point to snorkel on the Apo Island with sea turtles (the tip comes here as well)! Because the little island not far from Siquijor!

More tips on Siquijor

We took the ferry from Bohol. Just to the port on Bohol, buy the tickets there and the rest runs complication free. Once there, a lot of minivan tricycle and jeepney drivers are waiting for you, who would love to drive you to their accommodation. You can also drive from the island of Cebu to the island of Siquijor, from Dumaguete also depart from ferries. Here is a list of transportation in the Philippines!

Here is a list of all our accommodations in the Philippines with more detailed experiences

Favorable: Residencia Diosa • 15,00 € / per night
A private small bungalow with kitchen and full amenities and a large veranda. Although not directly overlooking the sea, but right on the sea, to which you can walk down in the evening – but not suitable for swimming, since it is too stony. We had power failures a few times, but that’s on the island, not on the property. The good: With candles the bungalow was even equipped! ➸ to the list of our accommodations in the Philippines
Residencia Diosa *

Expensive: Islandia Beach Resort • 25,00 € / per night
Here we have treated ourselves something. At these beaches with these views, we wanted to stay right on the beach! And have found it! The Islandia Beach Resort boasts beautiful large bungalows and a private beach, even if it is not quite suitable for swimming. Rocky and sea urchins. But who wants to enjoy the view, is right here. The property also offers bungalows right on the beach!
Islandia Beach Resort *

Expensive: Tropicasa • 25,00 € / per night
The accommodation is located on the dream beach at all: Salongon Beach. The view was just amazing!
Tropicasa *

Insider Tip • Cambugahay Falls

One of the main roads of the island invites you to drive a moped and next to the beaches (here you will find our darlings!), We have also found this little paradise on earth: the Cambugahay Falls! Drive a bit with the moped, then run down stairs and you can put the next step purely in the milky turquoise of these waterfalls! Try to avoid the weekend (we have missed it), because then you will meet fewer people, because especially at the weekend, the locals like to picnic with their family. Oh, with a rope you can jump from the rocks!

02. Island Bohol • Tarsiere and Chocolate Hills

tarsiers
Bohol is an island and on it is the peninsula Panglao. While the peninsula of Panglao boasts beaches and perfect relaxation, Bohol is well known for two attractions: it is once the smallest primate in the world, the Tarsier! He is the smallest primate in the world, lives on the island of Bohol and … is quite sensitive: With too much noise and turmoil around him, he bangs his head against a tree until he dies … sounds maybe funny, but it is as soon as you get on the way to the Tarsier Sanctuary. &# 128521; (Here’s the Google Maps location). Important: There are two places on Bohol where you can see the animals. The Loboc Tarsier Conservation Area Here is absolutely to be avoided, since the animals here are not really protected and kept appropriate. The Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary on the other hand, where we were, is recommended. So you better go there! &# 128578;

Chocolate Hills
The Chocolate Hills are 1,268 perfectly hemispherical hills of the same height, spread out over a vast area. During the dry season, the grass on them turns a brown color – the reason for the name Chocolate Hills. (Here’s the Google Maps location, also at the bottom of the map). As you can see, we do not have a picture here, although this hill is probably the first to connect to Bohol Island. We did not make it, so it comes here on the catch-up list! Here we found a travelogue that describes what it looks like and how to get there!

More tips on Bohol

Quite simply: Rent a moped. The way is easy and beautiful too! Once there, you turn off your moped, pay the entrance (about 1.10 €) and go into a kind of small forest. There are employees on every corner who make you aware of the small animals by pointing with a stick at them. You will notice how you automatically behave calmly: Blame for one of the sweet little creatures destroying their heads no one wants to be! Entry to the Tarsier Sanctuary will cost you approximately € 1.10 per person.

How do I get to the peninsula??

Once on the ferry to Bohol arrived (information on the means of transport in the Philippines ➸), you will realize that the question is not necessary. Zig Tricycles are already waiting to give you a prize and take you along. We went with the tricycle, about 30 minutes took the drive to Alona Beach. Most drivers also know the names of all accommodations, so even that is easy!

For given occasions, as often asked: How to get from Donsol to Bohol?
We get this question almost every other day, as we came from Bohol to Donsol. As we have once answered them here in the comments, we copypaste at this point: In short: The drive from Donsol to Cebu was one of our most brilliant onward travel on the entire world trip! &# 128578; However, you have to plan for this way almost 2 days.
• We drove about 20 minutes by jeepney from Donsol to Pilar.
• From there we boarded the ferry to Masbate. I think the trip lasted just under 5-6 hours.
• In Masbate City we were looking for accommodation for one night and the next day we went by bus and tricycle to the south of the island.
• There we got on the next ferry that took us to the north of Cebu.
• From there we went on a bus with which we drove to Cebu City.

You have to be prepared, however, that departure times of ferries can change every now and again and even the locals often do not have the latest information about it. We drove further to Bohol and paid for the entire onward journey 64 €, for two persons. Although the journey is so complicated and exhausting, the adventure is definitely worth it! An adventurous onward journey, as you always imagine! &# 128578; In addition, below you will find a comment from readers who have a tip, if you plan on Saturday the onward journey: Because then there is still a ferry that passes directly! Take a look at the comment from two explorers below!

What were our accommodations?

Lennon’s Place • € 19.00 / per night
We were at Alona Beach. The whole bars, restaurants, etc. Was ok, to eat full fast, but otherwise very touristy. After all, the accommodation was nice and cheap. A bungalow complex in the countryside, launched by an Ami and his wife. Here is the typical backpacker life. Shared kitchen, shared bathroom, a cozy, open common room and if you book a double room, you will end up in a large, spacious bungalow!

Momo Beach House
If you want to be VERY quiet, looking for something off the beaten track and really pure relaxation in a chic resort, we discovered the Momo Beach Resort on our beach hopping. If the purse says yes, give it a try!

Insider tip • stable internet

Okay, a nerdy insider tip, but sometimes important for further travel planning! The internet in the Philippines is very slow and sometimes does not exist, at least that’s how it was when we were there. You might also have some wifi in the accommodations, but … in modem speed. If you’re on Panglao Peninsula and need to plan your onward journey, go to Henry’s Pizza (Here’s the approximate Google Maps location, but it’s also shown at the bottom of the map). He has the best Internet of the peninsula, because it has created the lines that are then distributed in the city &# 128521; As we deal with SIM cards and Co. on the way, we have explained here in a video succinctly!

03. Island Palawan • The village El Nido with gigantic nature

This little village is no longer a secret. El Nido. Once a fishing village, today it has become THE attraction of Philippines with bars, restaurants, lodgings and co. Why? This is located off the coast Bacuit archipelago. Consisting of umpteen rocks, perfect dream beaches, countless snorkel spots and so much more, which belongs to a wonderful natural scenery! With so much to see, there are 4 different tours throughout the city that are all the same. Tour A, B, C and D. The tours differ in that they approach different places. We had decided on the Tour A, which should be the best, according to many travel report. Although we have no comparison but can say: we were not disappointed! What a dream to scenery! But of course you have to be aware that you will not be alone in this attraction and will be accompanied by tens of boats. If you can think away the tourists, take in the paradise! Here you come to a video that we have uploaded to Facebook!

We also have a detour to the Nacpan Beach made! The Oberhammer! Check out our list of our favorite beaches in the Philippines!

More tips on El N >

We flew to the capital of the island Palawan: to Puerto Princesa. Once there, there are already tens of people waiting to take you to El Nido with the minivan. The trip takes about 5-6 hours and cost us 450 PHP. El Nido probably also has an airport, but this is a expensive resort, which directly flies its guests from Manila. But hey: I prefer to travel by land, save money, do something good for the environment and meet locals! The bus stops in between at a reasonably priced restaurant, so that not too much food is needed. All information about means of transport in the Philippines ➸

How to book a tour in El N >

As I said, it will be easy: Everywhere in the center of the village sellers who sell the tour. Really … everywhere. The tours do not differ, they all head for the same stops, at the same price, as they have agreed to offer the tours all at the same price. Here is an overview of the tours in advance! So you can not go wrong. Just sign up and off you go. We booked our tour on the recommendation of a reader in Art Café. It made a reliable impression and we were satisfied! The tours are quite organized and well done. In addition, on the second floor at the information desk incredibly useful information material for El Nido! Starting from a list of all accommodation in El Nido including prices, activities and attractions in and around El Nido, prices for transport, etc … definitely worth a visit to stock up with info at the beginning!

Where should I book which accommodation??

Novie’s Tourist Inn • 18.42 € / per night for a bungalow without air conditioning, with fan
We were not in the tourist center, but about 2-3 kilometers further inside. It’s all there: supermarkets, food, tricycles that drive you into town for pennies. There are many accommodations, it is a bit quiet and “native”, so we decided to go there. The accommodation has some bungalows, we got a bungalow with a small veranda, without air conditioning and were satisfied. The property also has a restaurant, offers free coffee and had everything we needed.

Insider tip • El Nido on your own: by kayak!

No matter what happens, no matter how long you are there: Rent a kayak! Join the tour first, but then discover yourself the next day! With the kayak you can easily drive around some rocks and will find a lonely dream beach after the next! It was our absolute highlight on the entire Philippines trip … once the boats disappear in the morning, you will think you have the archipelago for you! Most popular in the Seven Commandos Beach (Here are the Google Maps data), which is even a stop of a tour, because it is located directly on the first rock. But actually you can choose it: Behind every corner hides a beautiful place! We also discovered a small lagoon where only one family was with their boat! Here’s the Google Maps location!

Sunscreen without microplastic

Many talk about plastic bags and straws in the sea – and somehow you forget quickly that the sunscreen is full of microplastics, which you carry into the sea. In Hawaii, sunscreen is already banned for this reason. We personally travel with ecoCosmetics * (no cooperation or anything), a sunscreen without microplastic and healthy for the skin! Maybe an alternative for you too. The sea thanks!

04. Apo Island • Snorkeling with sea turtles

Here you come to a small video on Facebook, which we have uploaded! Ever wanted to snorkel sea turtles? We also! This is possible on the Apo Island, not far from Siquijor. The Apo Island is really a very small island with some small beaches. There are only a handful of accommodations, as the main attraction here are the sea turtles! Here is a kind of “Sanctuary”, where you will definitely meet the turtles! However, you will not get there on your own …

More about Apo Island

We booked our tour from Siquijor Island. There was only one supplier at the time: the luxurious, gigantic Hotel Coco Grove *
.

You go to this hotel, sign up for a tour, pay and then it starts the next morning at 7.30 clock. On a boat it is about 30 minutes to Apo Island. Once there, we were divided into groups of four, who were then assigned a guide, because they know where and how to discover them best! The tour also includes a buffet lunch and a drink to enjoy on the beach. The hotel has a sister hotel on Apo Island. Then it went on to two incredibly beautiful snorkeling spots! The tour is definitely recommended and we were completely satisfied!

How Expensive is a Tour to Apo Island?

We paid for the tour 1,600 PHP + snorkeling equipment 260 PHP p.P., that’s about 35 € per person). We have heard that you also come from Cebu on the Apo Island, but the tour should be recommended. Unfortunately we did not have a comparison, but we said that we were satisfied and were able to kill two birds with one stone: see Siquijor and from there to Apo Island! Incidentally, here you will find all the information on travel credit card and withdraw money on trips!

Where do I sleep best??

We stayed at Siquijor and started the tour from there. We have listed the accommodations above at the point “Siquijor”!

05. Luzon Island • Snorkelling with whale sharks in Donsol

Crazy, right? The Philippines make it possible. More specifically, the small village Donsol. Because in the bay in front of Donsol whale sharks romp between January and June, completely free, very wild. You do not need any diving equipment, no experience, just the knowledge and the promise of nature not to touch the whale sharks, but just to swim with enough distance next to it. But: It is not guaranteed that you will see any. They are free in the water and if they swim too deep, they are swimming too deep … but we were lucky enough to discover 3-4 whale sharks!

Important:
Even though you’ve heard that on the island of Cebu there is also the possibility to snorkel with whale sharks: do not do it, even if the way there is more comfortable. There, the whale sharks are fed all year round, umpteen boats bustling around a whale shark and more people. The food is shot out of the boat and the whale sharks swim afterwards. This is anything but free, wild and natural! Especially because the whale sharks stay there all year long and do not move on – what they should actually do. Here is a fitting video on how such a tour looks like and why you should not support this!

Further information

Option 1: Airplane + Minivan.
From wherever you fly to Legazpi Airport. This is the closest airport to Donsol. From there, minivans or you take a Jeepney, which then brings you to Donsol.

Option 2: train + bus.
We drove from Manila on the night bus of the company Philtranco. This is a bus company that is well known in the Philippines and has a good route network. For this we drove the day before by train to the bus station Philtranco Pasay (here the Google Maps location), bought us there the tickets and are back the next morning. The ride went overnight, about 10 hours and we arrived directly in Donsol. The night bus was cheaper and the money goes to the local transport. We paid € 18 per person for the way including rail travel from Manila to Donsol.

Take a look at the comment from two explorers below!

How do I register for such a tour??

There is a small Whale Shark Center in Donsol. (Here’s the google maps location) Here you go, log in, try out the snorkeling gear, watch a movie about the rules, and you’re done to get on the boat you go by jump as soon as the guides have discovered a whale shark. Approximately You will be on the boat for 2-3 hours and meanwhile you keep saying, “Go go go goooo!” And without hesitation, you jump off the boat, dive under and … you may already be next to the biggest fish in the world! We paid about 25 € including rental of snorkeling equipment. (Overview of all our costs during the Philippines tour ➸)

Where do I sleep in Donsol??

Here you will find a complete list of all our accommodations in the Philippines including pictures and descriptions! In Donsol we stayed here:

Amor Farm Beach Resort • € 17.88 / night
The accommodation we had chosen was an absolute dream. What we did not know before: It was a large complex with an open restaurant, hammocks, seating and bungalows … all overlooking the sea. We had a bungalow without air conditioning, only with fan. It was clean, spacious and we would recommend it to anyone!

Insider tip • The village of Donsol itself

Even if the whale sharks are the attraction in the village … grab a tricycle and drive to the “center” of the village. The Whale Shark Center and most of the accommodations are oceanfront. The village itself is about 3 kilometers from there. Just walk along and take in the simplicity and life of the villagers. It is a peaceful little village that is definitely worth a little walk!

Pack snorkel!

Especially in the Philippines, you will often go snorkeling, but you have to borrow the stuff every time and pay. And the snails are not always good or fit. Save money and bring your own! That’s our equipment for this:

06. Island Luzon • Rice terraces and Taal Vulcano

travel terraces
On the island of Luzon in the north is the capital Manila, as well as the famous rice terraces in Banaue! Actually an absolute must see in the Philippines, really. But we did not record it on our trip … after enjoying some rice terraces on Bali and tea plantations in Malaysia and seeing our time waning too fast in the Philippines … so we decided against it. If you’re there, try not to miss it!

Taal Volcano
In addition, in retrospect we got a great tip from a reader: Taal Vulcano! The next trip is something from the top of the list! He described it as follows: “A volcano with a lake in it, with a volcano in it and a lake in it, and an island in it. That’s all I have to say, is not it? “- No, he does not have to say anything more! And, it is only 3 hours by bus from Manila!

Further information

Insider tip • Rice terraces in Moligcongas

The tourist routes in Moligcong are little visited by tourists and should also be extremely beautiful! Maybe it’s worth a detour! A place to stay should be Bontoc, from there you can grab a jeepney and drive to the rice terraces!

07. Caves of Sagada • Luzon Island

Sagada itself is said to be a less touristy city and worth a visit for alternative tourists! One can experience a lot, it says, among other things: the caves. They are far below Filipino soil and you can climb through them in a multi-hour tour … it looks damn deep, tight and: spectacular! The city should not be so touristy anyway – one more reason to drive there!

08. Kayangan Lake • Coron Island

Coron is a city on the island of Busuanga and an island in front of it. It is now the island complex over Palawan. The city of Coron has the most accommodation options * on the island. In addition, the island hopping tours start from there. On the island of Coron itself can not be stayed, but it is rightly an integral part of almost all Iceland Hoping tours. And there on the island of Coron is also the Kayangan Lake – probably the cleanest lake in Asia! Ok, whether it’s clean or not, it does not matter, because the lake just looks awesome with the environment! For time greens, we have not made it here – therefore included here! You can find a travel report about the tour here!

Insider tip • Busuanga

On Busuanga are the fewest tourists on the road … because most make only island hopping tours, so worth a motorcycle ride! Because we have also received advice from a reader!

Activities in the Philippines

surfing

That’s good in the city of Baler and in Siargao, according to a Twitter chat we had with people from the Philippines. At the same time it should be a beautiful old city!

canyoning

We would like to do that everywhere where the world is! Good that it is also possible here: on Cebu! For this we have also found this report here.

diving

… you are in the Philippines and of course you can dive! Yes, we thought, too, if we had not been permanently ill in the time we were in the Philippines … had too much wet hair on the moped. Therefore, make sure you do better and join us for a round!

Hey,
yes, I believe there are two or three Conservation Areas.
At 22places (https://www.22places.de/bohol-tipps/) I read that in a facility, the Makis should be kept outside the opening hours in small cages. Allegedly for the “resting phase”.
On several blog I’ve already read something like that, but everyone writes something else. That’s why we are currently really in conflict &# 128577;
But maybe we’ll just try it at your facility.

Hey Jenny!
We were in the first described … such a bad impression as the two of us did not have and at the beginning was much enlightened, everyone has behaved quietly, no cameras on the cameras, etc. but maybe we were there for a low season? To be honest, we are not sure if we overlooked something …
If I were in your place, I think I would either leave it alone and wait for a chance, until you see her in the wild (in Sulawesi, for example) &# 128578; ) or an animal welfare organization and the Philippine Tourist Board, maybe they have even more info. We will put it on the list and research it again! Thanks in any case for the hint!

Hello you two &# 128578;
In April 2019 we start. The route is fixed so far.
But have a question about the Tarsier or the little Makis: in what facility were you exactly?
There are supposed to be several and some should have catastrophic conditions.
So what would we really like to support.
LG jenny &# 128578;

Hey Jenny!
There are several?
We were here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/Philippine+Tarsier+Sanctuary/@9.6907827,123.9526892,12z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0xbf9bd933c18ea237!8m2!3d9.6907827!4d123. 9526892
The Tarsiers were not imprisoned anywhere, they made every effort to keep everyone folded and quiet, and every Tarsier had a co-worker who made sure everyone behaved calmly and did not get too close. I hope that was not one of the catastrophic conditions, if so, let’s get this out of here. But at least that was not known to us … if you know more, like to come here with the info!

Hello you two,
I am currently planning my 4 weeks in the Philippines at the end of this year. At the top of the to-do list is to do a diving course. Do you have a tip for me on which of the thousand beautiful spots in the Philippines I should do that ?? I just got flooded with info &# 128521;
Thank you for your help!
Greetings from the Allgäu

Hey Sabrina!
Aaaah since we did not dive unfortunately in the Philippines, because we were constantly cold (what an irony: D), we can not say that! Aaah sorry !! But we would tap on El Nido and Malapascua! And Cebu … but yes, we can not give personal experiences here &# 128577; I think if Bohol had offered it or Siquijor, we would have made it there!

Hi you two,
thank you for your answer! Now probably Bohol, here it fits best in the travel plan &# 128521;
best regards
Sabrina

Hello everybody,
I’m planning to fly to the Phillies for 4 weeks, but I’m on my own. I’m 23 and have often heard that it is not necessarily recommended for a single girl traveling alone. What are your impressions in this regard?
Greetings from Bali

Hey Viola!
So as far as the Philippines is concerned, we are just wondering that you have heard it that way … actually it is a good country as a solo traveler! Have heard of no problems so far … sure, the south (Manado) is a taboo region for tens of years, but for all tourists, whether solo travelers or not. But otherwise … we would not know what to object to &# 128578;

Hey, I’m sitting on Siquijor and want to go to Donsol later on my trip! From which port in the north of Cebu did you go to Masbate (and what was the port there)? I somehow do not see any ferry connections on the map … I hope they still exist, here you never know &# 128512; I hope you can remember and thanks for the help! Greetings from the Philippines &# 128578;

Hey Sabine!
Oh dear, I’m afraid we were too slow to answer??
Either way, we would not have known how exactly the port was called, unfortunately we did not notice that &# 128577;
Aaah damn, sorry!!
But maybe you have already arrived well?! &# 128512;

hello Sabine,
We also plan a trip to the Phillies. Do you still remember how you came from the north of Cebu to Masbate?
Or even better if someone could tell me how best to get from Donsol to Bantayan Island.
VG Enrico

Hey dear ones,
we have this onward journey just behind us. Originally we had planned it like you, but we are and now in the Philippines & suddenly everything was completely different &# 128512;
So here’s a little tip for those who want to travel SATURDAYS from Pilar to Cebu.
We also took a ferry from Pilar to Masbate (at 3:30 pm) and when we got there around 6pm we heard from a night ferry directly to Cebu!
Ultra cool! :)
It runs at 7PM EVERY SATURDAY and lasts about 12 hours.
There are 3 different bed categories:
– Economy (xxxl dorm on deck without AC) 750php
– Tourist (xxl dorm on deck with AC) 890 php
– Private Suite (for 2-3 persons with AC) 1899 php
Due to the fact that we were close to the ticket counter, there was only economy left. That was also completely sufficient &# 128578; The airstream is super refreshing and the bed surprisingly comfortable & clean. Were totally surprised & begeister :)
On board there was also a small cafe – so you have everything you need.
And after 12 hours we arrived in Cebu, shortly afterwards we were in Bohol and did not even need 24 hours instead of the planned 2 days :)
It was great! Too bad that the ferry only on Saturdays …
Greetings from Bohol✌&# 127996; :)

Haha, terrific!!
Thank you so much for all the information, refer directly to the commentary!
Hammer! Even if we do not want to miss the 2-day trip: so of course you have saved a lot of time! &# 128512;
Greetings to Bohol!!
Ania &# 128578;

Hello you two,
For me it is the beginning of April in the Philippines and I am currently looking for a way from Donsol to Cebu. How did you do this without flight? Was there a direct ferry or something you had to climb and do you still know how expensive that was? Thank you very much and for all the other tips &# 128578;

Hi!
In short: The drive from Donsol to Cebu was one of our most brilliant onward travel on the entire world tour! &# 128578;
However, you have to plan for this way almost 2 days. We drove from Donsol about 20 minutes by jeepney to Pilar. From there we boarded the ferry to Masbate. I think the trip lasted just under 5-6 hours. In Masbate City we were looking for accommodation for one night and the next day we went by bus and tricycle to the south of the island. There we climbed on the next ferry that took us to the north of Cebu. From there we went into a bus, with which we drove to Cebu City.
You have to be prepared, however, that departure times of ferries can change every now and again and even the locals often do not have the latest information about it. We drove further to Bohol and paid for the entire onward journey 64 €, for two persons.
Here you will find an overview, to all our costs: https://www.geh-mal-reisen.de/reiseziele/philippinen-reisetipps-insider-tipps/philippinen-reiseroute-kosten/
Although the journey is so complicated and exhausting, the adventure is definitely worth it! An adventurous onward journey, as you always imagine! &# 128578;
Greetings and a good trip
Daniel

Sounds really exciting, thanks for the info &# 128578;

Hello my dears,
I’m sitting on Panglao and look at your travelogues. Unfortunately, I can not visit a single beach or so because it just pours for days. Apparently, the next few weeks should not get better. That’s really frustrating. Since you have the most beautiful beaches and paradises on the doorstep and can not enjoy it …. &# 128577;
Well, I’ll take a look at your photos! &# 128578;
Love from

Oh nooooo … this is really annoying &# 128577; But hey … at least you have sea in front of you! And not a house wall, as we are here in Düsseldorf right now! (An attempt to cheer you up …: D)
Greetings to the Philippines and we keep our fingers crossed that maybe it will be even better! &# 128578;
